2021 Greetings to Sweethearts of the West.
Thought I'd list a bit of trivia to start out January of the new year.
First of all, it's been said that New Year's Day is the most celebrated holiday around the world. I know people around the world are certainly glad to say 'good riddance' to 2020 and hoping for a happier, healthier and more normal 2021.
Here's some interesting historical trivia that took place on January 1st through the decades:
January 1, 1776 - During the American Revolution, George Washington unveiled the Grand Union Flag, the first national flag in America.
January 1, 1863 - The Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in the states rebelling against the Union.
January 1, 1892 - Ellis Island in New York Harbor opened. Over 20 million new arrivals to America were processed until its closing in 1954. The site became part of the National Park System by Presidential Proclamation in 1965, and was reopened to the public in 1990 as the country's primary museum devoted entirely to immigration.
On this day, January 4, 1735 - American Patriot Paul Revere was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Best known for his ride on the night of April 18, 1775, warning Americans of the British plans to raid Lexington and Concord.
January 4, 1752 - Betsy Ross was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a seamstress credited with helping to originate and sew the Stars and Stripes flag of American in 1776.
January 4, 1809 - Louis Braille was born in France. Blinded as a boy, he later invented a reading system for the blind using punch marks in paper.
