And of course, where I live in Tidewater, VA, there are plenty of very large US Navy bases.

My father-in-law was in Pearl Harbor on a ship when it was hit. He never said a word about it until a few years before he died. Then one day with my hubby sitting at the kitchen table, it all came out. My mother-in-law was flabbergasted. When she asked why he'd never said a word about it, he laughed and said she would have made him leave the military. He was career and retired from the Navy. Maybe if I'd ever lived on a coastline, I might have been more knowledgeable.
I feel much more educated now on a rare time in our country's military history.
I do love the photo of the sailor on a horse with a gun strapped to his back.
Thanks for this superb post and research.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16272417114895975742noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1822452633282744192.post-55553917233243787422017-04-14T11:15:37.735-05:002017-04-14T11:15:37.735-05:00Linda, That is interesting! My friend Dee Stuart wrote a children's book--SABOTAGE--based on a true incident where a 10-year-old boy saw two Germans land--I think in Florida. After their boat had left, they buried something before walking into town. The boy got an adult and they discovered a large amount of counterfeit money. When the men came back to retrieve their cache, they were apprehended. It was the first time in his life he had gone anywhere outside the small communities surrounding Numidia, Pennsylvania.
I especially liked the picture of a Navy man riding a horse on the shore.
All the best to you, Linda.
