To only write the history wouldn't be as much fun. By combining them, it gives readers a new perspective on the real west. There's the "Hollywood" west and then there are those of us who dig for the real west. Sorry readers but there were no porta-potties along the way. Even having a pump for water in the house was a luxury. And some of it can be a real eye-opener for those who have never read about the real west. Add a little love and it can be magical. :-)E. History in school is taught by battle dates. I love knowing how the people lived and what they did. When I discovered Roberta Gellis books, I went crazy. She mixed real European history into stories and I learned so much from her books. Really? That's how they paid their taxes? So when I started down this path, I wanted her accuracy in my books. I had her found several years ago on the web and contacted her. We had some lovely conversations and I'm so thrilled to have met her. As I've worked on historical novels, there have been so many times I've wished I could ask her about things. Especially when researching things. I've been very lucky to have some wonderful authors in my life, as a reader and as a writer. Thanks for stopping.E. Some Hank Williams but not everything. I loved folk music. Some great stuff there. I still love a good bluegrass and a good fiddle. But country began to cross over and that opened that music genre to people who might not have otherwise listened. And I'm sure there are plenty of young people who probably never heard of Dale Evens and Roy Rogers, and would not recognize Happy Trails or even know the words to any of it. They are American icons. As photog for the county fair for years I was able to get behind the scenes and be with those riders. Let's leave it with I know what's under those jeans. ;-) It's really not exciting - I promise! There are some boys there with their whole family and others without anyone. I looked at a few of them and knew someone had spent a fortune to make certain they had pretty smiles, yet they didn't wear a mouth guard. Yikes! It's a very dangerous sport! And the bulls get points too! <br />BTW, I'll let you in on a secret. Those bulls know there's a treat waiting for them when they go back through the gates! But there's always one that seems to like "showing off", chasing the clowns, or has in general decided he was not going to be confined. And when they are in that latter mood, they can be darn scary! I still write contemporary romances and I enjoy doing that too. In an odd way, I have fallen in love with my fictional town of Creeds Crossing, and I like going and forth in time with the families. I think it gives the readers an insight as to who we have become today and how our roots remain with us.E. I'm just lucky my parents raised me to respect all people and to understand that we are all equal no matter what our beliefs, color, or anything else. Is there evil, yes. Do people do bad things? Yes. That's like saying this cop did a bad thing therefore anyone who wears a uniform must be bad. But that mentality still exists. And it seems as though if you are poor, you will be trampled on because "they" can do it. "They" have the money and the power to do it. E. It's a little too cold for me. :-) Maybe if I could snowbird... The research is amazing and I often spend hours and hours reading, etc. But I do have an ace in the hole. I have a friend who is from there, actually in the area in which I write, and he loves my books. He said I have the place nailed. He reads and get terribly homesick. But I have one odd skill that has really helped along the way. The ability to "read" old photos when researching. It's not unusual to discover that something marked 1885 or earlier or later was actually from a different time. And don't get me started on old maps! What a mess that is! Yes, it shows a railroad but the railroad wasn't there yet, just planned. E.
